Photographic slides contain three layers of organic dye — cyan, magenta, and yellow — suspended in a gelatin emulsion on a transparent film base. These dyes were never permanent. Over decades, they fade at different rates, causing colour shifts that worsen with every passing year.
Kodachrome is the most stable slide film ever produced, but even Kodachrome fades. The cyan dye deteriorates first, causing a gradual shift toward warm magenta tones. Ektachrome and Agfachrome fade faster, with cyan and yellow dyes both vulnerable, often producing a distinctive blue-purple cast. Fuji slide films tend to shift toward green as the magenta layer fades first.
Beyond colour fading, slides face a biological threat: fungal colonisation. In humid storage conditions, microscopic fungi feed on the gelatin emulsion, producing branching filaments that etch permanently into the image surface. Once established, fungal damage cannot be fully reversed — but it can be arrested, and the slide can be scanned before further damage occurs.
Mounted slides in carousels or magazines are additionally vulnerable to "Newton's rings" — rainbow-coloured interference patterns caused by the slide pressing against its mount. Glass-mounted slides can develop condensation between the glass and film, accelerating fungal growth in a sealed, humid microenvironment.

Slide scanning demands a fundamentally different approach from print scanning. Slides are transparent media — the scanner must project light through the film and capture the transmitted image, which requires optical systems with far greater dynamic range than reflective print scanners.
Our scanning infrastructure uses dedicated transparency scanners with multi-element optical arrays that capture the full tonal range of the original film — from the deepest shadows to the brightest highlights. This recovers detail that was invisible when the slide was projected, because projectors compress the dynamic range of the image.
The scanning system incorporates infrared dust and scratch detection — a secondary infrared scan identifies surface defects that would otherwise appear as white spots or lines in the final image. These defects are then automatically removed during processing without affecting the actual image data beneath them. This technology cannot be used on traditional silver-based Kodachrome slides, which are opaque to infrared — for Kodachrome, our technicians perform manual dust removal using anti-static treatment and precision air cleaning.
For large collections, each slide is individually loaded, aligned, focused, and scanned. We do not use bulk-feed autoloaders that can scratch slides or miss focus — every slide receives individual attention.
